Letter: U.S. should not support evil

By Mike Ellison, Vancouver
Published: January 25, 2024, 6:00am

Hamas’ attack on residents of Israel on Oct. 7 was evil. Its results are human death, captivity, suffering and increased animosity. The war and siege of the state of Israel on the residents of Gaza is evil. Its results are human death and human suffering — homelessness and starvation; lack of water, health care and functioning sewage system; and increased animosity. The U.S. funding of Israel’s war is evil. It is our genocide tax. The result of U.S. funding is the human death and suffering that Israel chooses. And it may include a regional Mideast war in which thousands of Americans, and numerous others, die — so much more evil.

As a U.S. citizen I am responsible for the evil results of U.S. funding. This is contrary to what I hear as a person of faith. Psalm 34:14: “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” Therefore, I call on Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell to immediately call for a permanent cease-fire and vote no on further military funding for Israel, and on Rep. Perez to disavow her censure vote against Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
