Letter: Salmon plans not working

By Larry Carey, Vancouver
Published: January 25, 2024, 6:00am

Salmon promising failures haven’t changed. Harvest depleting recovery and diversity. Habitats where thousands were eliminated after 30 years still empty.

Wild fish advocates supported Endangered Species Act recoveries, forwarded no gains over decades, next choice crush dams. They tried to conquer hatchery prodigies, favoring wild, became wishy-fishy, picky, ghost chasers. Wild fish already compromised due to hatcheries.

Harvesting includes endangered species so grants can kick high-dollar cans of insanity. Moving forward “what resurrection”? Can grants save that, too? Mixing genetically is unstoppable. No end goals although wild recovery still flops. Mixed genetics are here and tomorrow’s future.

Special interest groups using science say “pure” but nature proved unsupportive. Dimwits outlaw ocean ranching but demolish dams? NOAA science has salmon dwindling quicker, lost spawning fish physically being unsupportive, then waste instead of naturalizing hatchery fish. Wrecking-ball science, how’s it been working? Wild genetics found in Great Lakes salmon. Imagine that!
