Letter: Eliminate time changes

By Terry McCann, Vancouver
Published: January 25, 2024, 6:00am

Regarding the article “Lawmakers push for daylight saving change,” (The Columbian, Jan. 18), both sides have valid points and we have been debating this for most of my 70-plus years.

I even remember when Oregon was on one time and Washington was on the other. Was that ever confusing for a kid to watch television in Vancouver with the stations all being on “Oregon Time.” Fortunately, that year I was not old enough to commute to Portland for work or school.

In the spring, summer and part of fall when one needs it the least, we get an extra hour of light in the evening. In the fall when one needs it the most, we lose that hour in the evening. I recently received a survey from Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on my preference. I think I chose permanent daylight time. What I hear the most complaining about is the switching back and forth.

I would propose a compromise. Let’s get the federal government and Washington to approve “Half Daylight Time” by only advancing a half-hour from Pacific Standard Time and then leave it alone all year. We can call it “0.5 Time” for short.
