Letter: All Americans count in democracy

Mr. Schimelpfenig claims in his letter (“Democrats are desperate,” Our Readers’ Views, Jan. 19) that “freedom is being erased by an elitist party that inserts itself above the true government, ‘we the people’ ” and “all the phony indictments against Trump are meant to keep him from campaigning. How else can Joe win, without election interference?”

I recommend you read the indictments. Are all these district attorneys, judges — and most importantly — fellow citizens like you who sit on grand juries intent on “persecuting” Trump based on nothing? Were the 60 lawsuits Trump brought claiming election interference overruled because all those judges — many of them appointed by Trump — and election officials lied? Look at the evidence; facts are what the justice system is based on, not unfounded claims and theories.

The freedoms being eradicated are the freedoms of women and their doctors to make health-care decisions without politicians decreeing what they can do, of teachers being free to teach without fear of losing their jobs, and of librarians to choose reading material. Republican politicians are the ones limiting actual freedoms.

Who do you think “we the people” are? Democrats are every bit as much “we the people” as independents and Republicans. Everyone’s votes count. That’s called democracy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
