Letter: St. James not always welcoming

By Rev. Dr. Patricia Mayes, Vancouver
Published: January 16, 2024, 6:00am

While I appreciate Ms. Donnelly’s vigor lauding the historical significance of St. James Proto-Cathedral as a “stand alone” place of worship in the upcoming merger of local Catholic churches (“Parishioners stand firm for St. James,” The Columbian, Jan. 6), it might serve this faith community and Ms. Donnelly better to research and practice some of the verbiage used to validate a position on this merger.

Those words are “Christianity, uniqueness, spiritual substance, faith experience,” and “destabilize the cohesive St. James faith community.” This characterization does not fit their consistent denial spanning years in not allowing the small number of five to seven volunteers and staff of the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center to park in their lot Monday-Friday, vacant except for funerals and special religious holidays.

The Veterans Assistance Center serves the welfare of veterans. Volunteers and staff need to pay to park at a meter, if one can be found. I have offered many solutions to the church’s many objections, yet the consistent answer is “unauthorized vehicles will be towed.”

I cannot see any exhibition of Christianity in living a faith sustaining spiritual life with this selfish, self-serving behavior that spans years.
