The Skyview boys basketball team needed to do a little extra work on a holiday, but it was all good.
Malakai Weimer had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, plus Jaxson Filler had 15 points and nine rebounds in a 56-52 overtime victory against West Valley of Yakima on Monday in the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational game held at Renton High School.
Gavin Perdue added 12 points and Demaree Collins had 11 for the Storm (9-5 overall) won their fourth consecutive game.
“Without practicing the past three days due to weather, it was a touch thing to travel three hours north and play a really tough state-level playoff team,” Skyview coach Matt Gruhler said. “I give a lot of credit to our team for the gutsy win.”
The game featured 13 lead changes with neither team leading by more than five points.
Gruhler praised the defense of Filler and Javen Fletch, who played solid defense against two of West Valley’s top players especially in the fourth quarter and overtime.
