While a member of the Elks Lodge we volunteered to pick up trash along a four-mile stretch along Interstate 205.
It started at the overpass that went across Salmon Creek near the 134th Street offramp. When we looked over the side down near Salmon Creek we counted over 200 disposable diapers along the bank of Salmon Creek. This is just above the Salmon Creek swimming area. Even with the settlement pools above the swimming hole, some of the material makes it into the water into the swimming area.
There should be barriers put up wherever a road crosses a river or creek. Some would say that would be too costly. That might be right, but if we don’t start protecting our water sources now it will cost a lot more to try to catch up later. Most of the areas can be taken care of with a cheap net system.
The feces- and urine-born diseases are waiting to attack you via the water we use to recreate. It is a problem that has to be taken care of soon. Salmon Creek has over eight bridges in Clark County alone. Be careful where you swim and fish. This is a problem that needs to be fixed now.
