Letter: Trump removal follows will of people

By David Evans, Vancouver
Published: January 11, 2024, 6:00am

In response to the letter by Peter Williamson (“Trump deserves due process,” Our Readers’ Views, Jan. 3), the actions of the Colorado Supreme Court and the Secretary of State of Maine did not deprive anyone of his/her constitutional rights. These actions were taken to carry out the requirements of the Constitution, namely the 14th Amendment, Section 3.

The people spoke through their representatives when this amendment was added to the Constitution after the Civil War. Since then, there has been no attempt to repeal this amendment. It stands as the will of the people. State officials who take Trump’s name off their state’s ballots are carrying out the will of the people.  We are governed by laws, including the Constitution, not by the will and whims of individuals and parties.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
