Letter: Crack down on impaired driving

By Ed Nelson, Vancouver
Published: January 10, 2024, 6:00am

Traffic fatalities are increasing because: 1) drivers have little fear of getting caught; 2) drivers have little fear of significant and timely punishment.

We need to fund more law enforcement officers on the roads to catch these impaired drivers. Passing more laws will not help unless we have more law enforcement on the roads to enforce them.

We need our courts to establish separate processes for impaired drivers to provide timely processing, consistency and punishment. Since these people are typically serial offenders, we need to put them in jail to protect the rest of us, instead of fines and probation and other liberal niceties.

For example: First offense no injuries, six months in jail; first offense with injuries, two years in prison; second and subsequent offenses with or without injury, five years in prison.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
