Winterhawks gets past Everett in shootout, 5-4

PORTLAND — James Stefan and Kyle Chyzowski both scored in the shootout and Marcus Nguyen had two shorthanded goals as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Everett Silvertips 5-4 in a back-and-forth Western Hockey League game Friday at the Memorial Coliseum.

Nguyen’s second goal for the Winterhawks (23-10-1-1, 48 points) tied the game at 4-4 with 38 seconds to play.

The teams traded goals all night with Everett scoring first and Portland answering each tally.

Josh Davies made it 1-1 in the first period, Nguyen made it 2-2 in the second, and Josh Zakreski made it 3-3 midway through the second.

Everett took a 4-3 lead at 14:34 of the second period that lasted until Nguyen’s game-tying goal in the closing seconds of the third period.

Portland outshot the Silvertips (22-14-1-1, 46 points) 55-32 in the game and 25-4 in the third period.

Nick Avakyan stopped 28 of 32 shots in goal for the Winterhawks.

BRONZE MEDAL

Portland’s Marek Alscher won a bronze medal with Team Czechia at the World Junior Championship on Friday at Gothenburg, Sweden. He had 18:38 of ice time in the third-place game.

Czechia beat Finland 8-5 after being down 5-2 late in the second period.

Portland takes on Western Conference-leading Prince George at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum.
