Letter: Trump deserves due process

By Peter Williamson, Vancouver

On Dec. 19, the Colorado Supreme Court struck Donald Trump from the ballot under auspices of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Reader Paul Quackenbush extols other states and voters to follow suit.

Will someone please help me understand how deprivation of unalienable constitutional rights to due process and the right to vote for candidate(s) of one’s choice supports democracy as practiced in America’s constitutional republic? As of this date, Trump has not been charged nor convicted of insurrection. Jan. 6 allegations can hardly be attributed to Trump; Trump made available assistance to those in Washington, D.C., federal resources to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Recall those tasked with safety and security declined that assistance.

Again, please tell me how violating our Constitution is guaranteeing democracy.
