Happy New Year! The first day of the year was quiet weather-wise with partly sunny skies and for once some blue skies and seasonal temperatures. Pretty mundane for us weather forecasters. But that is all right because I’m sure we will have some active weather in the year ahead.
We’ll see some showers today and a risk of showers Wednesday, with Thursday the driest day this week. A change to more active weather is in store for the weekend and beyond as a cold trough of low pressure slides down the B.C. coast. This will bring colder air especially to our east. Snow levels will drop to 2,000 feet or so and the mountains will get some much-needed fresh powder. Amounts right now are unknown as it depends on where the front sets up and its associated movement.
We most likely see some snow down to our local foothills if enough cold air gets entrenched in the trough of low pressure, so stay tuned. At this point I don’t know if a change to colder weather will persist or be more transient. Weather models have different solutions. But if you are hoping for mountain snow and perhaps lower elevation snow, it will be a good chance.
Also it may be windy as well, depending on where the first low center travels Friday and Saturday. We’ll keep the weather eye out.
