A pickup struck a fire hydrant Monday morning, releasing thousands of gallons of water near Burton Road and Northeast 109th Avenue in east Vancouver.
The Vancouver Fire Department responded to the crash about 11:20 a.m. Engine 6 arrived on the scene and found one small truck on top of a fire hydrant with gallons of water flooding the surrounding area, according to an agency news release.
Crews could not locate the water main shutoff due to the high volume of water and debris in the street. The water department responded soon after and shut down the main, the news release states.
Witnesses said the vehicle’s occupants fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.
The Vancouver Police Department and Vancouver Public Works kept westbound Burton Road closed between 112th and 107th blocks while the hydrant and water main were repaired, according to the fire department.
