I agree with The Columbian as it calls for transparent discussion, without the hyperbole, about the future of the Columbia River Basin (In Our View, Feb. 9). However as the conversation gains momentum here in the Northwest, we must address a pervasive misinformation campaign that is sometimes reflected in the pages of The Columbian.
Let’s set the record straight: The negotiations that led to the Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative were normal proceedings that are part of any court case. There were no “secret negotiations.” Period. The parties involved in the lawsuit to restore Columbia River salmon runs agreed to mediation overseen by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, a nonpartisan federal agency established to settle lawsuits through confidential mediation.
Reps. Dan Newhouse and Cathy McMorris Rodgers know this. Nonetheless, they continue to engage in a disinformation, conspiracy-themed campaign to mislead, undermining our progress toward a future where salmon, energy and a strong Northwest economy coexist.
The Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative puts us on the path toward the right side of history. History will not look kindly on elected leaders who continue to play politics through hyperbole and disinformation, misleading the public and their constituents. Facts matter, and we appreciate The Columbian’s efforts to hold our elected officials accountable.
