Winterhawks clinch WHL playoffs with convincing win over Giants, 8-3

PORTLAND — James Stefan and Kyle Chyzowski each scored two goals as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Vancouver Giants 8-3 on Saturday to clinch a berth in the Western Hockey League playoffs.

It will be the 13th consecutive season Portland (37-13-2-1) has made the postseason.

After falling 3-1 at Vancouver on Friday night, the Winterhawks put three goals on the board in the first period and four more in the second as seven different skaters recorded multiple points Saturday against the Giants.

James added two assists, Marcus Nguyen had three assists, Luca Cagnoni had a goal and two assists, and Diego Buttazzoni had a goal and an assist.

Ryan Miller, Marek Alscher and Tyson Jugnauth each had two assists. Single goals were scored by Kyle McDonough and Nate Danielson.

Justen Maric stopped 17 of 20 shots for the win in goal.

The Winterhawks finish the weekend at Everett on Sunday.
