Letter: U.S. should push for cease-fire

I am an 82-year-old who has voted Democratic in every presidential election since I was 18. However, today I see our tax dollars paying our client state, Israel, to kill thousands of civilian Palestinians in Gaza. To date, the civilian fatalities include over 10,000 Palestinian children.

Nearly half of the bombs used to level civilian housing and critical infrastructure are “dumb bombs.” There is no such thing as a truly “smart bomb” and collateral damage is never a surprise considering the well-known physics of bomb explosions.

Do we have any leverage to encourage Israel to negotiate a cease-fire and stop killing children? Yes. We have given $221 billion since 1949. Most of this goes to their military.

President Biden must demand that Israeli initiate an immediate cease-fire and allow access to cross-border aid in order to stop the slaughter of the civilian population of Gaza. If he fails, he shames everything this country allegedly stands for. He betrays those of us who have voted for democracy and common human values for decades.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
