I fail to understand the hypocrisy. Border security has been a long-term concern in this country. Republicans have criticized the current administration for not effectively dealing with it. Finally, a rare bipartisan package has been reached.
Border security is indeed a complex issue in a complex world. While the agreement may not be perfect, it is a step in the right direction. Approval would increase the chances of enacting future legislation to further strengthen border security. Border Patrol agents have endorsed it. Yet, a majority of Senate Republicans are opposing the deal, and the House speaker has said it is dead on arrival.
Immigration reform should not be an election year political football to promote the failure or win of one candidate over another. It’s time Congress steps up to the plate and passes this legislation as a first step toward much-needed reform. Immigration is a human crisis, not a political issue.
We deserve to have our elected officials seek solutions by working collaboratively and in good faith as opposed to the dysfunctional chaos that has unfortunately become the norm.
