The Seton Catholic girls basketball team fell short in their bid for the 1A District 4 title as Montesano claimed the top seed with a 41-36 win Saturday at Hoquiam.
Seton (19-5), which had a 16-game win streak end, will be the No. 2 seed from the district to the state tournament. Pairings for the regional round of state will be announced on Sunday.
Remy Jenniges and Riley Seymer each had nine points to lead the Cougars in scoring.
Montesano (15-9) started the game on a 9-0 run only to have Seton pull even at 10-10 by the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs finished the first half with an 8-2 run and led 24-19.
The third quarter was a grind as the teams combined for just nine points. Alyssa Mancuso’s 3-pointer pulled Seton to within 27-25 going to the fourth quarter.
Seton would tie the game three times over the final eight minutes, but could never take the lead.
Evanjillie Dalen, who led all scorers with 17 points, put Montesano ahead for good with a three-point play with 2:37 remaining.

PENINSULA 58, KELSO 38 — The Hilanders were eliminated from state contention with the loss.
Bregan Ruhland led Kelso in scoring with 12 points. Peyton Champagne had eight rebounds and six points.
“We started out the season 1-5 and ended it 12-6,” Kelso coach Jennifer Frost said. “We beat both of the league champs and grew together as a young team that returns all but two seniors. To make it one game from state is a testament of the type of kids Kelso High School has.”
