Weather Eye: Don’t be surprised if we see some wet snow this week

After the weak weather system Monday exited our region, colder air aloft arrived, and this morning’s low was forecast to be near freezing in some areas. Tonight, it will be chilly again and then rain settles in on Wednesday at the same time colder air from Canada decides to move southward.

Oh no, could it be? What I can tell you is if that modified Arctic air slides well east of us, it most likely will trigger those pesky east winds and keep our highs in the low to mid-40s and lows in wind sheltered areas freezing. More precipitation is on tap for Thursday and Friday, ending Saturday.

Right now, snow levels should remain in our foothills but don’t be surprised to see perhaps some wet snow falling at any time here in the lowlands. At least watch for the splat test on your car windshield. By Sunday we will rise back to seasonal temperatures and more rain. Freezing levels will inch back up to the upper ski areas.

The precipitation that arrives here the rest of the week will be from a tropical origin so warm air aloft. However if — and it is a big if — enough cold air from the Gorge flows in, well, who knows. I don’t expect anything to interrupt anyone’s business, maybe conversational snow if we are lucky.

On a brighter note, the government is telling us that El Nino will be weakening soon and by summer La Nina will pay us another visit. Warm summer ahead? Too far away to predict but it may signal the jet stream that has had its bull’s-eye on California all winter will relax and move northward where it should be. We’ll see. Something to mention is all at this point.

Bucking trends

How are we doing weatherwise this month so far? The average mean temperature in Vancouver is 45.9 degrees, 3.9 degrees above normal. Sound familiar? The rainfall is .74 of an inch, 1.70 inches below normal. That bucks the trend of the winter months.

I’ll share the rainfall reports from around our area later in the week so stay tuned. Take good care.
