Girls Wrestling: Faith Tarrant of Prairie, Niah Cassidy of Union win at 4A/3A regionals in quest for state titles

Washougal's Vargas earns title at small-school regionals

Faith Tarrant and Niah Cassidy pinned their way to titles at the Class 4A/3A Region 3 Girls Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

Tarrant, a Prairie junior seeking her third state championship, captured the 235-pound title at Bethel High School in Graham. She pinned Skyview’s Madisyn Cardens 1:57 into the championship match to improve to 31-0 on the season.

Both Tarrant and Cardens won their prior two tournament matches with pins in less than one minute.

Cassidy, a Union senior, won the 130-pound title by pinning Shelby-Rae Enos-Cressy of Graham Kapowsin 3:34 into the championship match.

A runner-up at Mat Classic last year, Cassidy improved to 40-1 on the season.

Five other local wrestlers earned runner-up finishes — Isabel Brown (Battle Ground, 100 pounds), Kamaile Taisacan (Mountain View, 115), Janessa O’Connell (Union, 135), Kadence Burleson (Evergreen 170) and Ahmiya Brox (Union, 190).

Vargas claims titles a small-school regionals

Washougal’s Aliyah Vargas blitzed through the bracket to win a title at the 2A/1A/B Region 2 Girls Wrestling Championships in Centralia.

Vargas scored a 15-0 technical fall over Aberdeen’s Peityn Munoz in the 140-pound title match. The junior won her two prior matches by pin.

Four girls from the 2A Greater St. Helens League or the 1A Trico League placed second — Leah Wallway of La Center  at 100 pounds, Couly McReynolds of Woodland at 115, Althea Walker of R.A. Long at 120 and Kiersten Lees of Washougal at 135.

W.F. West won the team championship with Washougal placing highest among local teams in eighth.
