Girls basketball roundup: Ava Smith hits milestone as Union routs Olympia 65-37

Skyview, Mountain View and Kelso also survive loser-out games

Rowyn Riley scored a game-high 26 points and Ava Smith reached 1,000 career points as the Union girls basketball team dominated from the start to beat Olympia 65-37 in the loser-out game in the 4A bi-district tournament on Friday.

Brooklynn Haywood had 19 points, and Smith 12. Riley made six 3-pointers.

Union (18-4) needs to more wins to qualify for the 4A state tournament. The Titans will play either Kentridge or Sumner in a loser-out game on Tuesday.

SKYVIEW 47, PUYALLUP 45 — Cameron Watson scored 14 points and TaRyah Hamstreet had 11 as the Storm rallied to win a 4A bi-district loser-out game in Puyallup.

The Storm will play Bethel in Spanaway in another loser-out game on Tuesday.

Skyview took a 28-26 lead into halftime. But the Storm was held without a field goal during a two-point third quarter, allowing Puyallup to go up 37-30.

Hamstreet scored eight points in the fourth quarter and Watson added seven as the Storm rallied to take the lead.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 62, CAPITAL 38 — The Thunder stayed alive in the 3A bi-district tournament by eliminating Capital.

Mountain View (16-5) ran away with the game thanks to a 46-point first half. The Thunder sank 10 of their 12 3-pointers in the half.

Layla Senderson had 16 points, Camaria Brown 13, Mylee Thompson 12 and Nina Peterson 11 to lead Mountain View.

The Thunder, needing two more wins to qualify for 3A state, will next play Peninsula on Tuesday in a loser-out game.

KELSO 54, KENTLAKE 34 — Kelso trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter and then took off from there to eliminate Kentlake and advance to another game in the 3A bi-district tournament.

“They stuck with us for two quarters, but the depth of our bench got us through the toughness that we wanted to play the whole game,” Kelso coach Jennifer Frost said.

Bregan Ruhland led the Hilanders with 12 points and also had eight steals, Kenzie Milligan had 11 points, Peyton Champagne led with 10 rebounds to go with seven points, and Karsyn Hall had nine points and nine steals.

Also needing two wins to reach 3A state, Kelso next plays at Auburn Mountainview in a loser-out game on Tuesday.
