An Oct. 5 plein air painting competition in Camas will honor the late Marquita Call, an arts booster and local gallery owner who founded the annual event in 2013. Call died in August 2023.

Plein air means “in the open air” and refers to viewing and painting an outdoor subject from start to finish, capturing it at a particular moment in time.

Artists must register in advance and pay a $20 registration fee. Registration ends Oct. 1 or when the limit of 100 artists has been reached.

All artworks must be created onsite, outdoors in Camas, on Oct. 5 to qualify. The event will proceed rain or shine. Artists must be 18 or older to participate. Artists can submit up to three paintings. All entries will go on display for sale at RedDoor Gallery in downtown Camas at the end of the day.

One juror will select three top finishers and five honorable mentions, all of whom will receive cash prizes. The first-place winner gets a $1,000 prize.

Applications are available at downtown Camas locations including RedDoor Gallery and Gallery 408, the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Camas Association. Applications are also available at Shangri-La Farm, 26300 N.E. Third St., in Fern Prairie.
