Weather Eye: Summer makes one last blast before September arrives

Another round of hot weather is on the way after somewhat cloudy and cool weather today. There could be a light shower or sprinkles mainly to our north and over the foothills. Wednesday morning, after clear skies overnight, expect lows to drop into the 40s and 30s in the usual colder locations around the county. It’s a sure sign that fall is near.

The rainfall so far this month in Vancouver as of Monday was 0.66 of an inch and if nothing is measured today, that will go into the record books for August 2024. I expect that beginning Thursday we have highs in the lower 90s into Saturday. Another upper-level low develops off the Oregon Coast like last week, but rain should remain to our south and over the Cascades. Probably some thunderstorms will develop but shy away from our neck of the woods. We’ll keep a weather eye out in case.

Sunday was the last day of 8 p.m. or later sunsets as autumn is nearing our doorsteps and we lose those precious daylight hours. I have always wondered during our dry summers how the grasses are dead brown and the weeds remain a luscious green? While writing my column Monday, I looked back 11 years ago and wrote that it was raining like crazy. Yep, we had one half-inch of rain on Aug. 26, 2013.

I have had many folks tell me they can certainly sense a change in the seasons lately. The cooler overnight lows, shallow ground fog, lower sun angle and all. But summer makes one last blast Thursday before September arrives. Lots of grasshoppers this summer, I understand they go in yearly cycles. I still see many of those tiny tree frogs frolicking around my plants.

I also noticed the ants Monday basking in the warm sunlight while they run along their minuscule trails carrying food bits back to their hideaway. The squirrels are busy now stashing their winter supply. So much is happening in nature preparing for winter while we carry along with our summer fun.

Students return to the classrooms this week as the hot temperatures arrive. Many schools are air conditioned, but my granddaughter said not the school buses. Oh well, the heat won’t last long. We’ll chat on Thursday, take good care.
