Letter: Woodin or Weaver for creek?

There is conflict going on in Battle Ground. The city has one major creek, but the creek has two names. Some maps use Woodin Creek, others Weaver Creek.

Logic says name the creek after Joseph Woodin, a homesteader on whose land are the springs that give birth to the stream which converges with Salmon Creek south of Brush Prairie.

In territorial times, Woodin was the first to carry mail between Vancouver and Amboy. The road often followed near the creek.

Who was Weaver? I find nothing about him. Some maps show a Weaver Creek Road in Yacolt. Perhaps a cartographer “borrowed” that name. Watershed signs throughout the city use Woodin Creek. However, an affordable housing development is soon to be called “Weaver Creek Commons.”

Who is responsible for accuracy and historical significance before a map is printed? It doesn’t seem to be GIS or the county. Both use both names.

Woodin or Weaver? I vote for Woodin, based on his early impact on vital communications.
