Vancouver resident Sammuel Hawkins, bandleader of the Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra, has been hired as outreach and public programs manager at the Clark County Historical Museum.
In addition to serving as the museum’s main point of public contact and outreach, Hawkins will schedule speakers for the museum’s public programs — including offsite lecture series History on Tap and the museum’s speaker series — and work with groups who “take over” the museum during monthly First Friday events. He starts Sept. 1.
Hawkins said he will remain executive director of the Historic Music Preservation Project, his nonprofit effort to collect, digitize and share musical scores from the early days of American jazz and dance music.
April Pereira, the Clark County Historical Museum’s outgoing outreach manager, has launched StorySpark Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to inclusive storytelling events, workshops and even dice-driven roleplaying games.
“Building on much of the work I’ve done here at (the museum), StorySpark looks to build community connections and create spaces where all voices are heard and valued,” Pereira said in a statement.
Pereira has a master’s degree in community and regional planning from the University of Oregon, and is the author of an upcoming fantasy-mystery novel called “The Artificer’s Dilemma.” Pereira is passionate about the power of inclusive storytelling, as demonstrated in their recent Clark County Historical Museum talk about the 50-year history of role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons.
