The 10th entry in the preeminent primate film franchise tops the DVD releases for the week of Aug. 27.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”: Set hundreds of years after the events of “War for the Planet of the Apes,” the story follows a young ape, Noa, as he encounters a charismatic ape king, Proximus Caesar, and fights to save his clan.

“‘Kingdom’ feels like both a reboot and a sequel, and an opportunity to set off a new ‘Apes’ cycle for the 2020s,” writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. “Director Wes Ball, who previously helmed the surprisingly great ‘Maze Runner’ movies, proves to be a worthy successor to … the franchise, delivering a character-driven story that wrestles with issues of equality, morality and diplomacy, punctuated by intense action sequences.”
