NEW YORK — This year’s MTV Video Music Awards will be bumped by a day to avoid apparent conflicts with the upcoming presidential debate.
Previously scheduled for Sept. 10, the annual ceremony will now take place the following night after Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump agreed to a televised face-off with ABC News on that same date.
The Sept. 11 show will go on at the UBS Arena in Elmont, Long Island, and air live on MTV at 8 p.m.
According to Variety, MTV did not cite the conflicting debate for its shift in programming but “made it unofficially clear that it has a history of encouraging civic engagement and did not want to stand in the way of viewers becoming educated about what’s at stake in a presidential election.”
