Weather Eye: More rain is likely on its way; will hot temps return?

If you enjoyed the rainfall on Saturday evening and desire to perhaps receive a little more, well I have good news. There is a small chance of a light rain shower today but Wednesday and Thursday may drop a quarter-inch or more of rain around the county.

A weak trough of low pressure moves across Western Washington today and another stronger one drops down the British Columbia coast midweek and should produce a general widespread rainfall. And this is August? This type of rain in August is somewhat uncommon and out of the ordinary. It will surely help reduce the fire danger and freshen plants and vegetation.

Could this be the end of summer and a transition to autumn already? It sure seems like it, however there may be some indication we will get some warm to hot weather next week but at this point that is an outlier. But I am watching the possibility closely and we’ll discuss it later in the week.

Rainfall amounts varied around the county Saturday between a third of an inch to 1.5 inches. Officially, Vancouver had .32 of an inch and that is the standing total so far as of Monday afternoon. We usually receive about a half-inch of rain in August and with the next weather system coming in could easily surpass that average. If we get enough warming before the front arrives, there could be thunder as well.

After the cool and showery air mass departs later in the week our high temperatures could struggle to reach 70 degrees Friday and Saturday. That would be considered chilly for late August. The month is flying by, and I think we’ll have an early start with fall weather this year.

Rainfall amounts from the thunderstorm that moved up from the south late Saturday produced 1.50 inches of rain above Dole Valley, between .40 and .50 of an inch in La Center, Yacolt, Amboy and Battle Ground. I had one report from Salmon Creek of .74 of an inch. Amounts varied as they do in thunderstorm activity.

It will be another interesting week watching the weather and the incoming clouds. Take good care and enjoy your week.
