Letter: Dogs in stores? Enforce the law

By Davis Evans, Vancouver
Published: August 20, 2024, 6:00am

Over the years I have noticed dogs in stores and they do not appear to be providing any assistance, as required by the law (“Are dogs allowed in Washington state grocery stores?” The Columbian, Aug. 10). I’ve seen big dogs, little dogs, dogs walking, in people’s arms, and in baskets.

I’ve frequently discussed this with store management. The response has always been that they are not allowed by their higher management to approach the customers and determine whether the dogs meet the criteria of the law or not. One manager was honest with me, saying, “I don’t care.” When I’ve tried to address the issue, I am suddenly the bad guy. One store manager called the sheriff on me.

The law is useless and encourages flaunting it and other laws. Nothing will happen until the appropriate law enforcement agency makes an effort to enforce it. Store management should be held responsible for ensuring that the law is enforced.
