Letter: Ask questions of candidates

Thanks for the primer to help voters ask questions and judge candidates. (“Candidates should concentrate on local issues,” In Our View, Aug. 10). Local issues are always important, with some being the same across the country: Lack of affordable housing, making sure families have enough to eat and jobs that pay the bills. The trick is to ask questions and vote accordingly, then follow up.

For example, where do they stand on renewing the child tax credit that cut poverty nearly in half? What will they do to make sure it passes? Or locally, what solutions do they propose for hunger and homelessness? These challenges can be met if citizens and government work together.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
