Weather Eye: Pleasant afternoons might transition to a little rain

Did you miss the sunshine on Monday and Tuesday? Outside of a few meager sunbreaks, skies remained overcast due to a strong infusion of marine air off the Pacific. This is our natural air conditioning, and I heard from many people that it was quite welcome.

But never fear, skies cleared quickly on Wednesday and as a result, afternoon temperatures burst into the low 80s. Today and Friday may see more of those marine clouds, but we shall have pleasant afternoons with daily highs in the mid- to upper 70s.

Saturday becomes interesting as another cold trough of low pressure advances inland. With help from a moist southwesterly flow of air we could even have another nocturnal thunderstorm. Some forecast models want to give us a quarter-inch of rain or more around the county. That would be welcome by most. Then again, we may receive less rain as these upper-level lows are fancy free and do what they may.

Regardless, pleasant weather and the best chance of a little rain in a long time is nearby. Forecast highs Saturday despite more clouds and chance of showers are expected to remain in the warm 70s. It will be humid, and you will feel the muggy conditions.

How does your garden grow this summer? I can boast a few ripe tomatoes due to the hot temperatures. A few of our residents in the far outlying areas in the foothills are not so lucky. I’ve had reports of overnight lows there in the 30s during June and July and even August. So many microclimates in Clark County.

Still no hot weather on the horizon so August may end up below normal with the average mean temperatures. We’ll see. The cooler weather will bring moderate to heavy rain in Northern Washington and British Columbia. That remains to our north as of this writing.

Looking back in my memories, today in 2010 I was at the beach and commented that with strong east winds it was 97 degrees right next to the water. The sand was 120 degrees, but the ocean water was 51 degrees. Back here in Vancouver we had three days in a row with highs of 98 degrees, Aug. 14, 15 and 16, 2010.

We’ll chat this weekend. Take good care.
