Letter: Reject option of drawbridge

By Mike Barrett, Vancouver

Just opened my daily paper and read the first article, “Officials celebrate $1.5 billion funding.” Nice to see that we may be inching (and yes, it’s inching) closer to finally getting a new Interstate 5 Bridge built.

During the event the article states: “When Interstate Bridge Replacement Program Administrator Greg Johnson took the dais, the bridge’s lift span began to rise. Within seconds, the bridge was leaden with motionless cars, tractor-trailers and pedestrians.

“You couldn’t have scripted this any better,” Johnson said. “Now you see what the issue is.”

Greg, we’ve seen the issue for many years. I have one question for you: Since you and anyone else who’s been stuck in traffic because of a bridge lift all agree that yes, lifts are an issue, why are you considering one proposed design for the new bridge that would have a lift span and still put a halt to traffic on I-5? Shouldn’t that have been rejected immediately?
