A group of 10 pharmacists and technicians at the Salmon Creek Walgreens Pharmacy filed a petition last week with the National Labor Relations Board to vote on joining The Pharmacy Guild, an IAM Healthcare-affiliated union seeking to unionize pharmacy workers nationally.

The group represents the first Washington store and the first Walgreens to seek a union vote with The Pharmacy Guild, according to a press release from the union.

The workers said in the press release they’re experiencing heavy workloads with inadequate staffing, resulting in longer wait times for patients and competing priorities for pharmacists.

The union said the workers requested voluntary recognition before filing for their election. Federal law allows employers to voluntarily recognize unions that demonstrate majority support. Walgreens did not respond in this case, the union said.
