Portland-Vancouver area Fred Meyer union workers will vote on whether to strike

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 will vote on whether or not to authorize an unfair labor practices strike against Fred Meyer stores. Voting by union-represented workers at Fred Meyer stores in the Portland-Vancouver area will start Tuesday.

No date has been set for a strike.

According to a statement, the union represents more than 35,000 workers in Southwest Washington, Oregon and Idaho, including approximately 4,500 who work at affected Fred Meyer locations.

The union claims Fred Meyer, a subsidiary of The Kroger Co., has committed multiple unfair labor practices, including not providing essential information for negotiations and not processing grievances. The union said it has also filed a federal lawsuit against Fred Meyer.

Fred Meyer responded with a statement saying it would continue to negotiate in good faith. Negotiations are set to continue Wednesday and Thursday.

The vote could authorize a strike as decided upon by union leadership.
