Letter: Trump’s rhetoric is objectionable

On July 24, a reader wrote to object to The Columbian referring to a Republican-endorsed candidate as an “extremist MAGA” (“Stop extreme rhetoric,” Our Readers’ Views, July 24). He asked, “Can we stop the name-calling”? He said “extreme words matter” and “let’s debate the issues and stop the name-calling.”

We agree. That is why we object to Donald Trump, who posted on Truth Social that “Crooked Joe Biden is the worst President by far, in the history of the Nation,” and “Kamala, our horrible and incompetent border czar will be worse!” In other posts Trump wrote that “Fake News” tried “to make ‘Sleepy’ look like a great President — he was the WORST and Lyin’ Kamala into a competent person, which she is not.”

Instead, we prefer President Joe Biden’s comments on July 24: “We have to decide, do we still believe in honesty, decency, respect, freedom, justice and democracy? In this moment can we see those we disagree with not as enemies, but as fellow Americans? Can we do that? Does character in public life still matter?”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
