I agree with John Crisp’s analysis of Alex Garland’s “Civil War” movie (“Sleepwalking into civil war,” The Columbian, April 23). Though this may be the case, I believe the essential ingredients for a violent confrontation involve three elements. Religion versus atheism (morality), economic depravity, and most importantly, the First Amendment. When freedom of speech is curtailed, people will vent their frustrations in safe spaces. Consequently, Mr. Crisp’s article concluded with the ominous foresight, “I didn’t see it coming.”
