MAZAMA — Two climbers were rescued Monday morning near Cutthroat Peak and one was flown out with a broken leg.

At 8 p.m. Sunday, authorities learned the two climbers were in need of help near Cutthroat Peak in northern Chelan County, according to a news release from Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

One climber, a 51-year-old Seattle man, broke his leg, while the other, a 44-year-old man also from Seattle, lost his rope and was unable to rappel down the cliff. Chelan County Mountain Rescue Association personnel began hiking toward the climbers’ location at about 2:45 a.m. and located them at 6:22 a.m.

A hoist-capable helicopter from Naval Station Whidbey Island was dispatched to the climbers and transported the one with a broken leg to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle at 10:34 a.m.

The uninjured climber was escorted back to the trailhead, the release said.

The climbers were scaling Cauthorn-Wilson Couloir on Cutthroat Peak.

The mountain is 8,050 feet in elevation and the couloir is 800 feet, according to Mountain Project.
