Letter: Evil should not be tolerated

Martin Niemoller was a Lutheran pastor in Germany when Hitler was in power and imprisoning and executing his political opponents. He was imprisoned by Hitler’s evil regime from 1938 to 1945, and narrowly escaped being executed. Here is a quotation from a speech he made in 1946, expressing his regret for not doing more to help those who were being imprisoned:

“First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I was not a Communist, then in turn they came for the Jews, trade Unionists, Catholics, etc., and I didn’t speak up, because I was not one of them; by the time they came for me, there was no one left to speak up for me.”

We are at that place in our country now, when that same scenario is beginning to take place in our country, with real evil hatred against the Jews, the Christians and the political conservatives. If you, my friend, think this is OK, and they won’t turn against you and persecute you, think again. Once this evil is tolerated, there is no stopping it until we, and our country, are all destroyed.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
