VANCOUVER – Nonprofit group Furry Friends recently remodeled the kitchen at its no-kill cat shelter. The Halfway House Shelter is an old house that was purchased in 2016. The outdated kitchen area was problematic, as cats were able to open cabinets and cause mischief.

Board member and master carpenter Jim Grafmyre decided to take on the task of remodeling it. With the donation of used kitchen cabinets from Danielle Chancey’s father, Grafmyre was able to give the kitchen a much-needed update and increase storage.

He started by modifying the cabinets in his shop. He removed the doors from the lower cabinets and built 37 drawers to take their place. New face frames were made and the refurbished cabinets received several coats of paint. Except for the drawer boxes, all the wood needed to transform the kitchen came from the donated cabinets, including the new drawer fronts. In all the project took 303 hours of time and cost just under $3,000, of which Jim and Karen Grafmyre donated $500. Betsy Sanford donated the tile to patch the floor.
