Letter: Where are we today?

By Liam McGill, Vancouver

This week I read about a local young person who had recently graduated from high school. Before college she took a year to volunteer with a climate activist organization. The article went on to say that she was arrested during a climate protest at Vice President Kamala Harris’ house.

On the one hand, is that what our young people do in their gap year? As a parent, how do you respond to that? On the other hand I remember students engaging in civil disobedience in the Civil Rights Movement, not to mention Vietnam. I struggle to sort out my feelings on this. Is that where we are at today that our young people need to face arrest for the greater good? Could someone tell me where we’re at?
