In response to “Immigrant threat is overstated” (Our Readers’ Views, April 4), yes, we do provide the ability to apply for asylum, and this is a completely a legal process under U.S. law. However, what is omitted from this opinion is that in order to apply for asylum, you must apply at a legal border crossing, such as an airport, an embassy or the border itself. You cannot cut through razor wire or another hole in the wall, pop up and say, “Give me sanctuary!” After you apply for asylum, you must be detained, pending a health and criminal background check, prior to your court hearing.
Over 90 percent of all asylum seekers have their cases rejected and are returned to their home countries. But President Joe Biden does not care; he simply overwhelms the court system, and we have folks who may not have a court case for up to 10 years — if they were even given a court date at all.
Letting folks scam our system is an outrage to those who immigrated here legally. This crisis at our borders is a huge deal. We need to vote out of office anyone who supports this madness.
