Letter: Embrace nuclear energy

By Duke Silva, Vancouver
Published: April 19, 2024, 6:00am

A recent letter suggested rejecting small-plant nuclear energy because they’re unproven (“Reject nuclear energy,” Our Readers’ Views, April 11). The U.S. Navy says otherwise. Reactors have been used in the Navy since the USS Nautilus launched in 1955. Hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors have been in service ever since.

In 2017, our Navy had 81 nuclear ships in service. No one has more experience than we do with small nuclear plants. A side note: There are 136 Navy reactors buried in Trench 94 at Hanford. Yup, they were all barged past Vancouver over the years.
