Letter: Nuclear energy is not clean

Washington announced that it would give $25 million to the same company that gave us WPPS to develop nuclear energy as a source of clean energy. House Bill 1924 and Clark Public Utilities want to explore it further to replace natural gas.

Why is radioactive fuel clean energy? This fuel has to be mined, which creates dust and water pollution. Processed into nuclear fuel that will have a devastating effect on our planet during and after use. Causing cancers of the bone, liver, lungs, and kidneys depending on ingestion.

Scientific American states there are 88,000 metric tones of radioactive fuel waste with another 2,000 added each year in the U.S. Equivalent to 35,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools if my math is correct. This does not include the waste of everything it touches throughout its useful life. With a radioactive half-life of 700 million years, this stuff will outlast our planet.

The federal government has been trying to find a way to dispose of it since World War II, but hasn’t. Considering all the nuclear accidents so far, I don’t think it’s clean at all.
