Weather Eye: Fair weather on its way for weekend, then temps cool

We may not have had several days with warm and dry weather this week, however after a weak weather system slides by to our west later this evening and early Friday, we get a warm and dry weekend. How is that?

Fair weather is a welcome sight at this time of the year as many have the weekend off and time to get out and enjoy the spring weather. Plenty of work in the yard probably. I think highs will be in the middle 60s on Saturday and perhaps a little warmer Sunday.

Then a cold low from British Columbia drops southward and lowers snow levels to 2,000 feet and brings back those cool April showers. However, as it looks right now at this writing, rainfall amounts look to be on the light side, so no downpours are foreseen.

So far in Vancouver this month we are running a little drier and warmer than average and that trend should most likely continue. Early Wednesday many of you experienced some light frost, especially in the outlying rural areas. Battle Ground had 32 degrees, Yacolt 30 degrees and others hovering near the freezing mark.

There is still snow on Silver Star as you may have seen Wednesday looking east toward the Cascades. That keeps the frost outlook active outside the main urban area. Rainfall from our local friends and neighbors are rolling in and we will look at how wet it was around the county soon.

With the mostly clear skies Wednesday, the visibility was excellent and from a good vantage point you could see all the Cascade peaks from Mount Jefferson up to Mount Rainier. The closest peaks such as St. Helens, Adams and Hood were coated in solid white and made me visualize a winter day.

Last year April overall averaged out colder than average and much wetter than normal. We had over 5 inches of rain in April 2023. It was so chilly that we did not see a high reaching 60 degrees until April 14. Despite the cold month nature turned a corner and presented some warm — maybe one would say hot — weather from April 26 through April 29. The highest temperature peaked at 88 degrees on April 28, which easily went into the record books as a new daily record high.
