Letter: Prevent a problem before it grows

The media coverage the last few months on deaths due to fentanyl has been extensive. But in all this coverage I have yet to read or hear how one can avoid an overdose.

Does our federal or state government have anybody trying to figure out why so much illegal narcotics from around the world are used in the United States? Why does it seem like so many of our citizens abuse illegal drugs, creating this inflow of narcotics?

It is great that Narcan is located at more and more places to save people’s lives if they overdose. But how much time and effort is going into understanding why people take illegal drugs in the first place?

It would be nice to prevent a problem rather than just reacting to it.
