Letter: Fear gets exploited

By Debra Di Piazza, Vancouver

My heart nearly broke for Carleen Stephens (“Democrats are erasing women,” Our Readers’ Views, March 28). Imagine the crushing fear and consuming rage of someone who feels that transgender and nonbinary persons, undocumented immigrants, schoolteachers and the homeless are responsible for all the terrible things she is obviously experiencing. As if they are the main drivers behind exorbitant housing costs, wages that barely allow one to make it week to week, the highest rates of gun violence and gun deaths in the world and lack of decent health care and child care.

Many on the right are willing to exploit the fears and anxieties of people like Ms. Stephens and offer them handy scapegoats, usually “others” who are just as powerless as they feel themselves to be.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
