VICTORIA, B.C. — Two goals from Josh Zakreski and a 20-save effort from Jan Špunar helped the Portland Winterhawks finish off the Victoria Royals 4-1 in Game 4 of the Western Hockey League first-round playoff series on Wednesday.

The Winterhawks swept the best-of-seven series 4-0 and will have several days off awaiting their next opponent.

Zakreski’s two goals came in the first 7:31 of the contest.

The 2024 NHL Draft prospect tapped home a Tyson Jugnauth pass at 3:24, then finished off some hard work from Kyle Chyzowski from the same spot four minutes later.

Cole Reschny brought Victoria to life with a power-play goal late in the first.

Neither team found much easy ground for the majority of the second period. But with time winding down, Josh Davies notched a backbreaker with a deflection on Ryder Thompson’s wrister at 16:35.

Early in the third, Kyle Chyzowsk snuffed out any final frame miracles with a gritty goal at 2:32 to seal the win.

The Winterhawks next opponent won’t be known for several days as there are two more Western Conference series to be completed. The four surviving teams from the first round are re-seeded for the second round based on regular season points.
