On March 26, customers of NW Natural received an email explaining the charges on our bills related to the Climate Commitment Act. Mr. Anderson, CEO, provided an explanation of these charges which increased some bills as much as 41 percent. But he missed the point of the act’s purpose.
NW Natural emits pollution over the allowable amounts, resulting in financial penalties. They petitioned the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission to allow these costs to be passed to their customers.
How does this motivate NW Natural to reduce their emissions? As they continue to pollute, penalties will increase, financially impacting their customers more. Climate Commitment Act policies are not the issue. They benefit our community. Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission’s ruling on NW Natural’s petition is inappropriate and does not support their role to “ensure services of regulated companies are … fairly priced.”
