Check It Out: Over the super moon for books

Did you know that a Super Blue Moon happened Wednesday? Was it really be blue? That might be super cool, but the term “blue moon” doesn’t refer to the moon’s color. A blue moon refers to the occurrence of two full moons during one calendar month. This August’s Super Blue Moon means that it will be one of the biggest and brightest moons of 2023 which makes it not just super but rare. I don’t know if it will be visible in our area because as I write this column clouds and rain are in the forecast for August 30th.

By the time you read this column, the Super Blue Moon event will be over, but learning more about the moon can happen anytime. And remember: Going to the library and checking out books doesn’t have to happen once in a blue moon.

Adults:

  • “Across the Airless Wilds: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings” by Earl Swift.
  • “Moon: An Illustrated History from Ancient Myths to the Colonies of Tomorrow” by David Warmflash.
  • “One Giant Leap: The Impossible Mission that Flew Us to the Moon” by Charles Fishman.
  • “Shoot for the Moon: The Space Race and the Extraordinary Voyage of Apollo 11” by Jim Donovan.

Children:

  • “The Apollo Missions for Kids: The People and Engineering Behind the Race to the Moon with 21 Activities” by Jerome Pohlen.
  • “One Giant Leap” written by Robert Burleigh, illustrated by Mike Wimmer.
  • “You Can’t Bring a Sandwich to the Moon…and Other Stories About Space” written by Laurie Calkhoven, illustrated by Valerio Fabbretti.
