Weather Eye: Clear and crisp weather ends as rainy season looms

The last weekend of October was absolutely fantastic with sunny skies, crisp temperatures and excellent visibilities. Did you see the snow-capped peaks? Even Silver Star Mountain in our nearby foothills was covered in white down to about 3,000 feet. I haven’t seen that in October for several years.

Saturday’s low was 28 degrees in Vancouver and 29 degrees on Sunday. Other lows around the county depended on exposure to the gusty east winds. Those areas stayed above freezing in the 30s while wind-sheltered locations dipped to the 20s. I had a couple reports of 19 and 20 degrees near the Yacolt area. That is chilly.

Saturday’s low of 28 degrees was the coldest low temperature since March 16 when it was also 28 degrees. The crisp clear evening hours Saturday presented a great backdrop to the rising full hunter’s moon. Nice and bright with a bonus as Venus shone brightly right below it.

The clear and crisp weather comes to an end today as we switch to a southwesterly flow, and you know what that means this time of the year. Yep, rain and more rain. Since it will originate in the tropical regions, snow levels will be high, and rainfall may be copious.

Streams are low right now so no immediate flooding issues on the horizon but something to watch if coastal rainfall is excessive. Local rainfall amounts Wednesday through early next week could total 2 inches here in the lowlands and 4 or 5 inches in the foothills and higher elevations. November enters our region on the wetter side of things.

On this last day of October, it will be mild and mostly sunny, great for trick-or-treating. Moist air and lack of cold dry east winds will keep us from any freezing temperatures after the sun sets. Get those leaves raked up before the heavy rains fall.

There is an old saying that a full moon in October without frost, we would have to wait until the full moon in November. We don’t have to wait for that one. Another one says plenty of rain in October forbodes a windy December. Nope. Vancouver will end October nearly three-quarters of an inch below average.
